The very first line of the Constitution tells us that it is the responsibility of the government to establish justice. Civil legal aid helps us meet this responsibility by ensuring fairness in the justice system for all, regardless of how much money a person has.
When Americans and their families cannot afford legal counsel and are forced to navigate the justice system alone, they face an unfair playing field in complex legal matters with devastating consequences.
Civil legal aid is provided by the government through the Legal Services Corporation (LSC), but the White House has called for LSC to be eliminated and the U.S. House of Representatives has proposed deep cuts to its budget.
